Las Bugambilias HOME
"Tu Casa en Oaxaca"

The beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca beckons you. Located south of Mexico City in a valley surrounded by mountains, it has a pleasant climate throughout the year. A rich heritage of Zapotec and Mixtec culture, art and architecture comes to life in colorful markets, exquisite art with traditional native crafts and indigenous ceremonies and dances.

Imagine yourself at leisure, sipping coffee in one of the sidewalk cafes in the arcades surrounding the Zócalo, observing the ethnic diversity of the passing scene: women from nearby villages in their colorful skirts and blouses, perhaps balancing a big basket of mangos on their heads; men and women in business and casual dress; children with their balloons; men in loose white trousers and straw hats; and in the evening, a band playing in the charming gazebo in the center of the plaza. Oaxaca offers museums, theater, grand churches, a symphony orchestra, markets, galleries, and restaurants. Delicious food, fine arts and crafts, beautiful music, and the warmth and generosity of the Oaxacan people -- all just waiting for you to enjoy.

Las Bugambilias (The Bougainvilleas), your home in Oaxaca, a haven of warmth and tranquility, is located within the historic center of town, an area that UNESCO has declared to be a part of the Cultural Patrimony of Humanity. We are just 5 minutes from the Zócalo and 2 blocks from the "Andador Turístico" area with its many beautiful churches, galleries, shops, and book stores and within walking distance of other interesting areas of the city. Accommodations include 7 double rooms and 1 suite for up to 4 person -- all with private bath and all tastefully decorated with regional art and antiques.

Our lavish breakfasts, featuring typical Oaxacan cuisine prepared with fresh and healthy ingredients, are served between 8 and 10 am in the main dining room. We can adjust the menu for special diets.

Las Bugambilias is home to the popular restaurant "La Olla" (the cooking pot) and provides delicious lunches and dinners in an atmosphere pleasing to visitors and local residents.

Our family offers specials tours of the city of Oaxaca and its environs. In addition to the more well-known attractions of the area, such as the archaeological sites of Monte Alban and Mitla, we can give you a glimpse of indigenous life in places that are usually not available to tourists.

Depending upon the time of year in which you visit, you may participate with our family in celebrations such as the festival of Day of the Dead; a traditional "posada" in our home during Christmas; Noche de los Milagros (Night of the Miracles) at the end of the year; the largest fiesta in Oaxaca - the "Guelaguetza" a dance festival - which takes place in July; and the many events and attractions of Easter Week. Learn to make the Oaxacan "mole" and other traditional dishes in our kitchen. Contact us for a complete list of such offerings.

Las Bugambilias offers you the opportunity to enhance your vacation by trying the traditional indigenous herbal sweat bath --Temazcal -- the nahuatl word for bath house. The traditional baths were used by the Aztecs as therapeutic cleansing and purification, and also for rituals. We invite you to take advantage of an unforgettable experience -- a journey to the indigenous past through the Temazcal bath -- where the combination of the energy of fire with wood, rocks, water and herbs purifies your body, your mind and your spirit. The bath house is constructed according to traditional specifications and is located in a lovely garden - a gift of nature which contributes to your feeling of tranquility, peace and rest. Observe and participate in indigenous culture in an extraordinary way. Our techniques of soft massage will relax, revitalize and energize your body.
